Mayor Peter Taylor’s manifesto commitment to make Watford a Dementia Friendly Town has been nationally recognised and shortlisted for the Local Government Chronicle Awards.
Since becoming Mayor in 2018, making Watford more inclusive of those living with dementia has been a key priority for Peter Taylor. The Council has undertaken a variety of activities, with the support of key partners in the town. This has included:
- Helping 14 local businesses become more dementia friendly
- Training over 3,000 people to become dementia friends
- Hosting 3 online events, 4 dementia restaurants and 8 memory cafes
Under the umbrella of Dementia Friendly Watford, key partners in the town have also expanded on the initiative to offer even more opportunities for those living with dementia. For example, students at West Herts College took the time to become Dementia Friends prior to opening their ‘Forget Me Not’ restaurant which aims to provide a dementia friendly dining experience for people living with dementia and their carers.
To ensure Watford continues to make Watford more dementia friendly, the council are currently running a survey to help shape the next stage of the action plan. The survey is available to fill out here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WBCDementiaFriendly
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said “It is great to be recognised for the work we have done to create a more inclusive environment for people living with dementia. Dementia is a cause very close to my heart, having had a grandparent live with dementia and seen that the simple things we take for granted, such as going to the shops or catching public transport, can become very difficult for someone living with the condition.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us make Watford more dementia friendly. We couldn’t have achieved this recognition without the great partnerships we have formed locally and, of course, the guidance and support we have had from the Alzheimer’s Society.
“To anyone who hasn’t yet got involved with Dementia Friendly Watford, keep an eye out for activities around the town to get stuck into and learn about how you can become and Dementia Friend – I promise you won’t regret it!”
Jennifer Pattinson, Portfolio Holder for Wellbeing, said “Watford Council and our partners are already working hard to ensure our town is a place where those affected by dementia feel understood, respected and supported and there is a lot more we can do to build on this. I'm delighted all the hard work to support Dementia awareness in Watford is being recognised nationally and I am excited to be involved in continuing to develop this incredible initiative.”
